Utilizing sound effects in eLearning Modules

Reflecting on the majority of eLearning modules, in most cases the use of Sound Effects (SFX) weren’t utilized.

SFX can be a great and underused tool, presenting information and emphasising it via an audio cue, that will alert the user and garner their attention.

Some clients have expressed that SFX take away attention from the Voice Over, however, I feel as though this is not true if the SFX are used to enhance and emphasis the key points within your eLearning modules.

Below are 2 valid approaches to ensuring you do not have competing audio and better yet, both are available native to Storyline.

  • Ensure in the timeline there is no overlap between your VO audio and your SFX audio in your eLearning course.

In the image above you can see that between the two audio assets there is no overlap, in fact Storyline will often try to snap audio end-on-end.

  • The second option is to adjust the levels of your audio files. Generally, if audio has to overlap, you want to maintain emphasis on your Voice Over as the Learning Objectives are critically important.

In the image above you can see Storyline’s Audio Editor. Here you can highlight the section of the audio you wish to adjust and use the Volume tool on the top bar.

A dialogue box will popup and here, you can adjust the audio’s levels. I suggest using 33%, but you may have to adjust depending on the average level of your specific audio file.

I hope you have enjoyed learning how to get the most out of your eLearning module development. If you would like to learn more about eLearning please visit: www.pathwaystrainingandelearning.com
