Types of multimedia you can add to your eLearning

When developing eLearning and digital training there are a number of tools you can use to add interactive multimedia to your course. Adding multimedia is a good way to keep your learners engaged and grab their attention.

Below are some types of multimedia you can add to your eLearning to increase learner engagement.

1. Whiteboard Animations

Whiteboard Animations are a form of 2d animation that you can insert into your eLearning course. Whiteboard animations are created using tools such as Vyond, which allows you to create animated scenarios using a wide variety of characters, backgrounds, and objects. Whiteboard animations can be used for a wide variety of purposes, for example if you are teaching learners about customer service you could create a whiteboard animation that demonstrates an example of good customer service. Once you created your animation you can typically download it as a video file to insert into your course.

2. Screen Recordings

Screen recordings are another type of multimedia that you can add to your eLearning course. A screen recording involves taking a video recording of your screen and inserting it into the course. You can do this using tools such as Camtasia which allows you to record your screen and make edits to your recording. For example, if you want to teach learners how to use a new tool instead of just telling learners how to use the tool you could make a screen recording demonstrating how to use the tool. As part of this you can add audio narration explaining to the learners what they are seeing, then add shapes, highlights and text to specific areas on screen.

3. Animated Text

In your eLearning course text is most likely going to be one of the main things you will use to teach your learners about a subject. However, if you use too much text it can make your pages static and uninteresting for the learner. One way to break up text is to add animations to it, in tools such as Articulate Storyline you can add animations to text (e.g. Fade In, Fly In etc.) these animations can be added to an entire block of text or to individual lines. This is particularly useful if you have bullet points as it allows you to animate bullet points in one at a time.
