How to Translate an eLearning Module in Adobe Captivate

Clients often ask for eLearning modules to be completed in multiple languages. If using Articulate Storyline, this is not a difficult task. Just create a translation file, and import it into the module, and you will have a fully translated module. However, if your original eLearning module is created in Adobe Captivate, the translation process is not as simple.

1. The first step is to go to file export and select to xml. After the file is done exporting you will have a new xml file containing the text from the module.

2. After you have your xml file open it with a text editor such as Microsoft word. The file should be formatted in such a way that the original text is in a table on one side, and on the other side is room for the translated text to go. Place your translations for the corresponding text in the translation side of the file.

3. Once this is complete simply import the new xml file by going to file->import->from xml, and the original text in your eLearning modules should now be replaced by the translations you have applied.

4. All that’s left to do is reformat the text boxes so that they fit properly, as most times the translated text will contain more text than the original.

The process is similar to Articulate Storyline’s translation process except the file used to apply the translations is an xml file. This can make the process slightly more confusing as depending on what version of word you are using, you may not be able to open the file, or the file may not be formatted properly upon opening it.
