Another Strange Bug in Articulate Storyline

By this point, people should probably know we love using Articule Storyline a lot here at Pathways, because it really streamlines our development process and helps us with creating highly interactive eLearning modules. That being said, because we use it in 90% of our eLearning projects, we are also more likely to find more bugs or inconsistencies than the casual users, which was the case of yesterday’s adventure while developing an eLearning course. To give you a bit of a bac

How well can you "Articulate"?
A few months back, I spoke to a recruiter who asked me if I knew articulate. I secretly grinned, 'Didn’t she mean do you know 'how to' articulate?' I was also a little peeved, how could she ask me about my articulation skills when she herself wasn't being grammatically correct! "I think I have decent communication and articulation skills"; I said. Now, it was her turn to chuckle. Turns out she was referring to Articulate-Articulate Storyline-the e-learning authoring tool!! GAMIFICATION PIPELINE
What Is Gamification? Gamification is a method of motivating and engaging learners by using elements of gaming in learning environments. Gamification can increase the efficiency and retention of curriculum material for learners of all levels, from children to industry professionals. Gamification fosters the natural human inclinations for competition, completion, and interaction, among others. Some elements of games that may be used to motivate learners and facilitate learning

ELEARNING GRAPHICS TUTORIAL – CUSTOM BUTTONS WITH STATES WHEN DEVELOPING ELEARNING MODULES
While most authoring tools do have some options for premade interactive buttons, often a particular module job or client will call for something with a bit more care and uniqueness when developing an eLearning module. I would like to share a simple walk-through which I use to create unique reusable buttons for use in any eLearning authoring tool. STEP 1 – DESIGN I begin in Adobe Photoshop. Create a canvas with a transparent background, that snugly fits the desired shape. Be s

WHAT MAKES A GREAT EDUCATIONAL GAME?
Educational games have suffered a bad reputation of being boring and lackluster for decades. Often, such games were created on a low budget with the sole intention to fulfill a requirement, and not necessarily to make the game engaging and fun. Perhaps the people who made such games were unimaginative, perhaps they didn’t care or have the resources to make a truly great game. However, if educational games are to be on par with the great games in the industry, they must follow

CREATING ACCESSIBLE ELEARNING MODULES
When creating eLearning modules, we naturally want to make them as interactive as possible. However, we must be mindful of the special needs of some users who are unable to experience the module in the same way as most of us. How do we make the experience of eLearning fair and accessible to all, and at the same time keep it fun and interactive? CLOSED CAPTIONING Viewers with hearing disabilities should not be kept guessing what the audio track is saying. Closed captions shoul

ELEARNING TRENDS 2016 – CLOUD-BASED ELEARNING SOLUTIONS
There are quite a few concerns about surrounding cloud-based elearning solutions such as a lack of IT support resources, data security or unreliable access. While these are all valid, great strides have been made to resolve those issues and provide a solution that has a great many benefits. Firstly, cloud solutions are easy to use and support. You don’t need to install software on each computer and you don’t need specialized IT staff to maintain the system; this is all done b

Time - Saving Storyline Tips and Tricks
Here’s a few of my favourite tips and tricks. Keep these in mind when you’re designing your next eLearning module, and they’ll definitely enhance your productivity! TRANSITIONS The Transitions panel at the top of the Storyline can be used to adjust the transition between any two screens. This obviously includes between slides, but it can also be used to transition between layers! This can be a great time-saver, if for example you’re using layers to overlay text or images on t

PROGRAMMING PRINCIPLES FOR STORYLINE DEVELOPMENT – PART I
The rise of graphical user interface-based programming software such as Storyline has simplified the creation of software and web content. No longer purely the domain of geeks, it is now possible to create a web application, for example, with no formal training, and no knowledge of a programming language. This democratization of technology has led to a flood of creativity, as anyone with an idea and a little patience can turn it into a mobile or web-based application. Unfortu

eLearning Development - Articulate Storyline Sliders
While not the most popular tool available in Articulate Storyline 2, one of my favourites is the slider. My preferred use of this little widget is using it as way to dynamically deliver information, (usually manifesting as steps or a process flow). To find this tool, look under the Insert tab from the Ribbon > then choose Controls > then select the slider of your preference. With your slider selected you can begin to setup your slider’s parameters. Once selected, the SLIDER T

Designing an Effective User Interface
Good user interface design is one of those things that are invisible when done properly. When a learner is using an elearning module, a great UI keeps the interaction smooth and makes sure the learner understands what to do at any given time. When done badly, it becomes an obstacle for the learner to struggle around while they’re trying to learn the content, and impedes their experience. Think of the UI as a tool for the learner to interact with the material, the way a mouse

THE LIMITS OF STORYLINE, OR WHY WE CAN’T USE IT FOR LEARNING GAMES
WHAT CAN STORYLINE ACCOMPLISH? The short answer to the question of Storyline’s capabilities as they relate to anything outside of pre-packaged eLearning, is… not much. A bold statement, to some, but as an experienced gamer, programmer, and eLearning developer it’s a hard truth. With that said, I’ll give more detail as to why exactly that is, and shed some light on the issue. Regardless of industry, we all want to promote our skills, and really flex the muscles of our software

REPLAY VALUE IN GAMES
Generally, when we buy a game, we aren’t really thinking about the second or third time we’ll play it. We’re focused on the immediate goals of exploring our environment and seeing what things are available to us. We like to test out controls and get a sense for how difficult the game may be. What I’ll be focusing on is the time you spend in the end-game. While focusing on the end-game certainly eliminates some types of games from our scope, it’s still a vast subject. To that

FIVE WAYS TO MAKE GAMES EDUCATIONAL
After a long absence, I am happy to bring you a new article on the topic of educational gaming. I apologize for the delay, but in my defense I must say that our company was busy creating new educational games, and as a result I have gained new experience to share with our valued readers. Today’s topic is about how to best put the “educational” into “gaming” without ruining the fun of it. As I often stated before, educational games have a sour reputation of being utterly borin

Elearning and the Theory of Multiple Intelligences
Traditionally, a person’s intelligence was measured by a standardized IQ test which was heavy on questions addressing logical thinking, mathematical ability, pattern recognition, grammar competence, and deductive reasoning. This kind of testing is biased because it caters to a particular type of person while neglecting the skills and abilities of others. In 1983, Dr. Howard Gardner introduced the idea of multiple intelligences in his book Frames of Mind: The Theory of Multipl

MLEARNING AND MOBILE APPS
We live in a time of radical change. The way and the speed at which we receive information has changed dramatically. Traditionally information was shared via the medium of books. The time it took to publish a book combined with its limited distribution imposed bounds on who the information was available to, and how fast it was available. With the advent of journals, newspapers, radio and television, access to information became faster and wider spread. The personal computer t
