Getting to work using Brightspace

Recently, Pathways was selected by Centennial College to create all the training for a program using their learning platform Brightspace, to cater to international students that, due mainly to the COVID-19 outbreak around the world, can’t physically make it to the classroom.

This is yet another example of how this virus has altered our day-to-day life, but even more importantly, this is yet another example of how technology can ease the transition to our “new normal” and open the doors to so much more people that want to be part of our training.

For those of you who don’t know, or have barely heard of it, Brightspace is a learning platform that, much like an LMS, helps the trainers (or teachers in this case) organize and roll out their training materials to learners and keep track of the activities and assignments they have completed. What’s great about this platform is that it’s not necessarily aimed to corporate training but also to Higher Education and even K-12.

Some of the many features that I’d like to highlight about this tool are:

  • Consistency: it is now common that learners access their training not only using their computers but also their mobile devices like phones and tablets, so Brightspace offers the capability of accessing training materials without any impact to the learner, due to its responsiveness, and more importantly, this platform was designed to be mobile first, which means that the main devices in which it focuses its efforts, are mobile devices. It is also important to note that Brightspace is very reliable when it comes to uptime, given that, as per their documentation and support documents, it is available 99.9% of the time.

  • Integration: For those companies that already have an IT ecosystem, it is important to note that they have systems in place to help you easily integrate Brightspace within your ecosystem

  • Report generation: One of the things that might not be readily available on the information you find online, is the reporting capabilities of this tool. It has at least 60 criteria to generate reports, that will allow you to evaluate the progress of your learners, but if you can find a criteria that accommodate to your needs, it lets you create your own, so that you can improve on your training strategy and help our learners improve as well.
