A Quick Comparison between Gaming and Gamification
Recently I was asked to review a clients first foray into gamification elements they had added to an eLearning module and upon completing the task, was left with the somewhat awkward task of explaining to them that what they had created could not be considered gamification, but rather gaming. After hearing this and going though a few examples as part of my explanation the client was grateful for the help and said numerous times they felt much more prepared to try again.
Following the above episode it occurred to me that there is still some confusion as to the difference between gaming and gamification and as such I though it would be helpful to provide the following explanation.
Gaming allows learners to complete exercises and reviews through fun interactions which can provide rewards and immediate feedback. This makes an attractive option for learners young and old and is quickly becoming a more popular alternative in eLearning.
Gamification on the other hand is incorporating gaming elements to make eLearning more engaging. For example, awarding badges or points when learners have successfully competed an activity as a means to encourage continued progress through the eLearning.
So to put it simply...gaming is just that...playing a game or activity. Gamification is your scoreboard, your achievements...your reward!
