What makes good eLearning?

Making effective and engaging eLearning for your learners can be a challenge, you may be an expert on a topic and know exactly what you want to teach your learners, but getting taking that knowledge and turning it into an eLearning course that is engaging and intuitive for your learners can be tricky. So what exactly makes a good eLearning course?

In short it comes down to what the learners want and being focused on what their needs are, below are some things you can to do to ensure you are making good quality eLearning for your learners.

1. Having a good User Experience

A good User Experience (UX) is one of the fundamental things when it comes to making engaging eLearning. The UX is the overall experience the learner has and includes a number of things such as having a clear, modern and intuitive User Interface (UI), a logical flow in terms of content and progression and ensuring that the learner is able to get everything they were expecting from the course. For example if a student is taking an eLearning course on accounting it is important they come away with knowing more about accounting then when they started. When designing an eLearning course it is important to dedicate time during the design phase to ensure a good User Experience is established, this will save time in the long run during the development phase.

2. Having responsive eLearning

Responsive eLearning has become a necessity in the modern day, in the past eLearning was primary taken on desktop PCs or laptops, now learners are taking eLearning on a wide variety of devices including smartphones and tablets, and a result you need to ensure that your eLearning can accommodate these devices. Mobile devices often have a smaller screen size which means there is less screen space for your content, on screen elements such as navigation and buttons will also be impacted as a result. When designing your course it is important that your content is accessible and clear regardless of the devices its being viewed on.

3. Having well thought out content

When deciding on the content for your eLearning course it can be difficult to decide what should be included and what shouldn’t. If you include too much content in one course you may run the risk of overloading the learner with information instead of focusing in on one specific area, the result of this can be the learner does not get a deep enough understanding of the topic you are trying to each. Likewise if you do not include enough information in you course you may leave gaps in the learners knowledge which will cause them to struggle when taking additional courses. When deciding on what content you want to include in each course its important to consult with a designer to separate content in a way the is effective and provides the learner with the knowledge they need.
