How can I add more interactivity to my eLearning?

When it comes to eLearning interactivity is vital, without interactivity it will not only be difficult to keep learners interested in the content you are trying to teach but may also result in learners not learning what you are trying to teach as a result of a lack of engagement. There are a number of things you can do to increase interactivity and improve the overall experience your learner has when taking eLearning.

Below are some of the things you can do to increase interactivity in your eLearning.

1. Knowledge Checks

Knowledge checks are one of the most common things you can do to add interactivity to your eLearning. A knowledge check is a question that tests the learner on a small part of what they have just read or watched, typically these would be place periodically throughout the eLearning, usually at key points. Knowledge checks vary in style and can be multiple choice, multiple selection or drag and drop style questions. The main benefit to using a knowledge check is that it not only adds a level of interactivity in that the learner has to do something, but also helps to reinforce a learners knowledge of what they have just learned. By asking learners questions about the content it will mean the learner has to reflect on the content and come to a conclusion in order to answer the question.

2. Adding Audio

Including audio in your eLearning course can be a relatively quick and effective way to increase interactivity and learner engagement. If you design a page that only has text on screen it can easily become very static, however this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use text as in some places it is the most effective way to convey a point. If possible, it is recommended to write a script and have a professional audio talent record the audio for you. With these audio files it is possible to insert them into pages in a eLearning course, when combined with text that reflects the audio it can be an effective way to increase learner engagement as opposed to just reading text on a screen.

3. Adding Animations

If you are limited in how much video or audio you can produce, adding animations is a very efficient and quick way to increase interactivity in your eLearning course. If you have a page that is text heavy animations can be one way to quickly bring the page to life. Most authoring tools have built in animation effects that can be applied to text or images and can specify when elements appear on screen. For example, instead of having a page where the text appears from the beginning, you can make it so that the text fades in and builds up over time, this way it prevents learners having to read large blocks of text from when the page loads.
