5 Tips for your First Meeting with a Client

When designing eLearning modules, it is important to meet with your client to get some details that will help with the development process. The first meeting is one of the most important meetings as if the meeting goes well and the right information in collected form the client, the development process will go much smoother and the chances of changes being requested by the client is much lower. Here are some tips on how to ensure your meeting goes smoothly and the correct information is collected.

1. Who is the eLearning module for?

It is important to know who is going to be completing your eLearning module before you start programming it. Depending on the learner’s different factors in development of your eLearning module may change. Some information you can request that can help determine your key audience are, the education level of the learners (high school, college, etc.), when and how the learner will complete the module (all at once, over a period of time), do the learners prefer a hands on approach or prefer more information and less interaction.

2. What is the goal of the training?

It is important to keep in mind during the development process the reason the eLearning module is being implemented. Something you can ask your client is what the learners need to be able to do after completing the module.

3. Has the client developed content for the eLearning module and/or does any content already exist?

Ask the client if they have developed anything for the module already. Sometimes clients will have a storyboard laid out which usually includes the formatting and the information. If the client hasn’t prepared any content, you will have to collaborate with them to come up with a plan for development.

4. Expectations

Prepare some demos to show the client and ask them for they’re opinions on the different modules. Make sure to keep track of the aspects of the different eLearning modules they like, such as formatting and activities.

5. Timelines for eLearning development.

Discuss with the client coming up with a potential timeline that is feasible. It is good to propose a timeline, even a very general one, as clients will almost always expect one.

If you follow these tips your client meetings will go much more smoothly and in turn your development process.
