Tips for Stitching and Editing a 360 eLearning Video

As per some of our previous posts, here at Pathways we have embarked on this amazing journey of creating 360 video for eLearning purposes. About two weeks we traveled to Vancouver, and with the help of St. John Ambulance, we had the opportunity to shoot our first 360 video for eLearning purposes.

For those of you who don’t know (and for those who do), the output from the 360 camera (depending on which one you are using) in its raw format, looks like the feed of 2 different cameras were put in one video. With our Ricoh Theta S, it looks like these:

Thankfully, Ricoh provides a computer application to “stitch” the video and create a version of the video that is compatible with 360 viewers, like the ones you can find on Facebook and YouTube. Basically, to stitch the video is to add a series of deformations to make the video equirectangular, so in the end, it looks like this:

With that in mind, you can now easily start editing your 360 video, which is not much different from editing a regular video, and that is because you will always be editing in a 2D space, meaning that you use the equirectangular version of the video to make your edits.

Editing software like Adobe Premiere Pro, can help us make some edits like cropping the video and adding tracks of audio. From my experience, if you are adding several tracks of audio to a video, you are better off creating a mix in Adobe Audition, it is as simple as importing the video (for reference) and sounds and then start adding them in different tracks.

In your sequence settings in Adobe Premiere Pro, make sure the size of the sequence is set to the same size as the stitched video, that way you won’t have any deformations and/or loss of graphical data once you render your video to be embedded in a 360 video viewer.

Stay tuned for future posts in which I will provide some tips regarding compositing and tracking in 2D space for 360 eLearning videos.
