One of the more popular trends we have seen lately is the request for 2-3 minute micro-training videos. These videos are a great way of delivering content to learners in small, content specific bursts. So why has microlearning become so popular? Internet sites like youtube for one, and you must also take a look at who comprises the majority of learners these days. Millennials alone will make up 75% of the workforce by 2025 and the average attention span of millennials is 90 seconds.*
When creating microlearning training videos there are a few key elements to keep in mind, such as:
One learning objective per video – the learning objective is simply what the learner will do or know after they have watched the training video. Since the idea is to have the video be 2-3 minutes max, adding more than one learning objective will make the video too long and you will ultimately lose your audience.
Video, video, video – think about how many people visit youtube on a daily basis to find out how to do something new. Just recently I had to add refrigerant to my car to get my air conditioning working, and guess what I did? I watched a 3 minute video on youtube on how to do it.
Quality matters – a poorly made training video can take away from good content. Technology these days has made it possible for nearly anyone to have access to good quality equipment, at reasonable costs. Do your research and find out how to make your video look professional, it doesn’t need to be Pixar quality, but you get the point.
Timing – keep your micro-training videos under 4 minutes, a good rule of thumb to follow is 120 words for every minute of video. Eliminate all the nice-to-know and stick with the need-to-know!
